Business Development Manager
Location: UK (London/Hybrid) · Hours: 37.5 per week · Salary: £55,500 · Type: Full-time
About the role
Freight Meter Ltd is seeking a Business Development Manager to drive commercial growth across our freight forwarding, warehousing and 3PL services. You will identify and win new clients, build long-term relationships in key sectors (e-commerce, import/export, manufacturing and retail) and develop structured sales pipelines that convert into high-value deals. The role is central to expanding our footprint in competitive markets and delivering sustained revenue growth.
Key responsibilities

Identify and secure new business via research, networking, cold outreach and online channels.

Build and maintain long-term client relationships that drive satisfaction and retention.

Create and manage a clear pipeline; meet monthly and quarterly targets by presenting tailored logistics solutions, negotiating terms and closing high-value opportunities.

Track market/competitor activity and customer needs; refine strategy accordingly.

Work closely with operations and warehousing to ensure smooth service delivery and excellent customer experience.

Collaborate with marketing on lead-generation campaigns, content and outreach initiatives.
Skills & experience

Proven experience in business development/sales or a similar commercial role.

Strong knowledge of freight forwarding, warehousing and logistics services.

Demonstrated ability to build trusted, long-term client relationships.

Excellent negotiation, organisation and strategic planning skills.

Confident communicator with clients, partners and internal teams.

Education: Undergraduate degree required; a Master’s degree is preferred.
What success looks like (first 90 days)

30 days: ramp on our services, ICPs and sales process; active prospecting started.

60 days: qualified pipeline meeting agreed value/volume targets; first proposals issued.

90 days: initial closes achieved; repeatable outreach cadence and account plans in place.

Freight Forwarding Specialist
Location: Glasgow, UK · Type: Full-time (37.5 hrs/week)
About the role
We’ve expanded in Glasgow and are hiring a Freight Forwarding Specialist to manage day-to-day forwarding operations. You’ll liaise with clients and carriers, build routings and rates, prepare documentation, and keep shipments moving on time and on budget across road, air and sea.
What you’ll do
-
Plan and execute end-to-end shipments (road/air/sea), selecting carriers, booking space, and coordinating collections and deliveries.

Prepare and verify shipping documents: commercial invoice, packing list, B/L, AWB, CMR, certificates, and transport insurance.
-
Handle UK/EU customs processes (CDS/GVMS), Incoterms, HS classification, and duty/VAT checks; coordinate with customs brokers where required.

Monitor shipments proactively via TMS/WMS/trackers; resolve delays, damages and exceptions; keep customers updated.
-
Obtain and compare carrier/agent quotes; negotiate rates and surcharges to meet margin and service targets.

Build strong relationships with clients, carriers and partners; provide accurate ETAs and post-shipment reports.

Raise job files, costs and invoices accurately; reconcile supplier invoices; ensure PODs and compliance records are complete.

Collaborate with warehousing/3PL teams on inbound receiving, pick/pack, cross-dock and final-mile scheduling.

Contribute to continuous improvement—SOPs, lane performance, carrier scorecards, and cost-to-serve analysis.
What you’ll bring

Experience in freight forwarding/operations (road, air or sea) within the UK market.
-
Working knowledge of customs procedures (CDS, GVMS), Incoterms, and shipping documentation.

Confident communicator who can liaise with clients, carriers and internal teams under time pressure.

Strong attention to detail, problem-solving and ownership mindset.
-
Competence with TMS/WMS/Excel; comfortable learning new systems.
Nice to have
-
Experience with time-critical/e-commerce flows and 3PL fulfilment.

Dangerous Goods awareness (IATA/ADR/IMDG).

Rate negotiation experience and basic margin analysis.
What success looks like (first 90 days)

30 days: master SOPs and key accounts; independently run simple jobs.

60 days: manage a mixed portfolio of jobs with on-time performance >95% and accurate files.

90 days: own core lanes; improve a process (e.g., carrier quote template or exception script) that saves time/cost.
